I’ve finally taken the plunge to migrate my WordPress.com blog to my own server, which is considered WordPress.org. The main difference is WHERE your blog resides. On WP.com, I had a free blog, but it lived on the WordPress.com site, so there were limitations to what I could do:
- Limited web space
- Could not upload media files
- Limited choices for customizing the look and feel of my blog
However, by downloading from WordPress.org, the blog now lives on my own web site (joelsolomon.com). This requires a little more technical knowledge to figure out how to get things up and running, but now that I have, a HUGE set of features are now available, and I can upload whatever I want, since it lives on my own web space.
Notice the URL of this site is http://joelsolomon.com/blog and does not contain “wordpress” anywhere in the title. My other WordPress.com blog has a different URL, http://joelsolomon.wordpress.com/ While these two blogs look similar (I used the same theme for both), there are big differences ‘behind the scenes.’
Here’s a few articles that explain the differences between the two types of WordPress blogging services better than I can:
