What is a Webquest?

This online research tool was developed by Bernie Dodge and Tom March, professors at the University of San Diego. They were looking for ways to have students utilize the vast resources of the Internet in such a way as to promote higher level thinking and collaborative learning.

Here's the "official" definition:

A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which some or all of the information that learners interact with comes from resources on the internet.

Here's a sample webquest I created as part of my Masters program at UCD. It's called "In a Poetic State" and the mission of the quest is for students to research one of the 50 United States and create a specific type of poem based on their online inquiry.

This webquest is currently listed in several categories on Webquest.org (Search" NEW > 3-5 > English/Language Arts, Social Studies, or Technology "), the leading authority on webquests at San Diego State University.
